約翰‧西姆于1970年七月10日出生于約克夏的西部利茲，在蘭開夏的 Nelson 成長。他先就讀于 Nelson 的 Edge End 中學，隨後在16歲時進入黑澤藝術大學繼續學習，18歲後工作于倫敦的戲劇藝術中心。他和他的妻子凱特瑪蔻溫還有他們的孩子 Ryan (出生于 2001年8月13日) 和 Molly (出生于2007年2月)一起住。1996年西姆在巴倫西亞電影節上憑其處女作 Boston Kickout 獲得最佳男演員獎。
